da brdice: According to The Sun, Tottenham have put Andre Onana at the top of their list to replace Hugo Lloris.
What’s the story?
With the January transfer window just around the corner, the Premier League clubs are already looking at new targets who they can boost their squad with.
In terms of Tottenham, The Sun is reporting that they are looking at Ajax goalkeeper Onana to replace Lloris. Whether that be at the start of next year or in the summer is not yet known, but any bid would need to be between £30m and £35m.
Gazzaniga is ready
It is hard to argue against the fact that Lloris’ time as Spurs’ number one could be coming to its end, even if he was recently nominated for the Ballon d’Or.
The France international has struggled in recent times. During these first few months of this current campaign, the former Lyon man has looked less comfortable than ever, making two mistakes that have led directly to goals for the opposition.
Also, he is beginning to regularly pick up injuries, with the latest being an elbow issue which is expected to keep him out until the end of this calendar year.

The World Cup winners’ long-term slump in form suggests a new first-choice is needed, and 23-year-old Onana, a Cameroon international and recent nominee for the Yashin Award, is a promising goalkeeper who played a big role during de Godenzonen’s run to the Champions League semi-finals last term.
However, Mauricio Pochettino has a potential successor already at his disposal in Paulo Gazzaniga. The Argentina international joined the north London outfit in 2017 and has had to play second fiddle to Lloris ever since. He has played just 19 games, but boasts a good record of 18 goals conceded. He has also picked up seven clean sheets.
In the five games he has played in the Premier League so far this term, he has a save success rate of nearly 75%, which is not to be sniffed at. His performance against Liverpool at Anfield, in particular, was impressive, with him picking up a WhoScored rating of 8.88, the highest of the match.
The £1.8m-valued former Southampton man – as per Transfermarkt – made 12 saves in that match, which is just two off the all-time record in the division.
Onana is an interesting option, but Gazzaniga deserves a chance to prove his worth if Lloris is to depart.
With rumours surrounding the future of Christian Eriksen, for example, funds will be needed for top-class reinforcements in other areas. The 27-year-old should be given the opportunity to prove his worth.
He has been patient and done well when called upon, and is ready to show he has what it takes to be a regular starter.
