Grealish arrived at City in the summer of 2021 in a £100 million ($133.13) move from Aston Villa, making him the club’s most expensive signing in history. He penned a six-year deal at the time, tying him to City until 2027. In his debut season, he helped secure the Premier League title and was integral to City's historic treble success in the 2022-23 campaign. That season saw him start in all of the Champions League knockout rounds as City lifted the prestigious trophy for the first time in their history.

However, Grealish’s role has gradually diminished, with the likes of Jeremy Doku and Savinho overtaking him in the attacking pecking order. Moreover, his absence from the squad in key matches, including the FA Cup final loss to Crystal Palace and their final 2024-25 league fixture against Fulham, signalled a potential shift in Guardiola’s plans.
