da aposte e ganhe: One of the most puzzling topics in football over recent years has been Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and his reluctance to make impact signings to strengthen his squad. With the January transfer deadline only several hours away, Gooners will be waiting in anticipation and hope that Wenger is able to surprise and deliver with a signing that will renew their continual faith and confidence in the team winning a major trophy. However, transfer deadline day for Arsenal fans can be like being in detention whilst watching all the other kids playing outside.
da apostebet: The areas that are in question of strengthening are in defence, with Thomas Vermalen suffering another injury set back in his recovery from an achilles problem. Whilst Wenger has spoken publicly during the current transfer window about an interest in signing a defender with Premier League experience, he has also stated that they will be able to cope if the right deal is not available. But if Arsenal are to make progress this season then surely they can’t rely on midfielder Alex Song and inexperienced Ignasi Miquel to see them through this important time of the season. Could Arsene Wenger’s transfer policy jeopardise Arsenal’s chance of winning trophies this season?
Last year Arsenal were top of the financial league table in the Premier League which made no secret that there are transfer funds for Wenger to use in order to boost his squad. But Wenger has always been one of the shrewdest managers when it comes to signing players and he is not prepared to gamble in the big money transfer market in order to take his side to the next level. Last summer saw the focus on their need for a new goalkeeper, with the ability of Almunia and Fabianski being questioned. It looked to be resolved with the approach for Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer until he reportedly failed a medical. Now Wenger has put the trust in another young ‘keeper, Wojciech Szcesny, the focus has shifted to the centre of defence, especially after Sebastien Squillaci’s straight red card on Sunday.
This season the Arsenal side have shown more fight and guile, which has been missing in previous seasons – most questionably the 2007-2008 campaign with the infamous game at Birmingham where Eduardo suffered a severe injury and thus their season seemed to crumble before them. But now without the likes of Vermalen to call upon and with the Barcelona Champions League tie fast approaching (not to mention the League Cup final inbetween both legs), it would seem a wise move to bolster the squad. Let’s not forget that Wenger has used the January transfer window to his advantage with Jose Antonio Reyes in 2004 and Andrey Arshavin in 2009, will he do the same this year?
If I was to play devil’s advocate and ask you to imagine Arsenal signing the likes of Shay Given, Gary Cahill and Southampton wonder kid Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on this transfer deadline day – surely it would send a message to the rest of the Premier League and to the loyal Gooners that this is the season they start to fill that trophy cabinet again. As much as I admire Wenger’s philosophy on football, from style of play to transfer policies, it just seems a missed opportunity if he fails to strengthen the squad for challenges that lie ahead.
